My pup is bad for the environment?

Meet Pete… he’s our 8-month-old puppy.

pete

He’s an outdoor enthusiast and major lover of nature – including the lake, the leaves and trees.

How could this sweet animal be bad for the environment? In fact he’s so bad that he’s being compared to a Hummer…the epitome of “big time polluter.”

(see the Seattle Times article)

Why? Because we’re ALL bad. Yes, that’s right.

Every breath you take and every drive you make…

Every piece of garbage you create

Environmentalists are watching you.

That’s what it feels like sometimes! I mean, really: we rescued this animal. He’s a lovely yet slightly goofy-looking mixed breed who loves all dogs, people and kids…and running, walking, biking, camping…so, what exactly is so bad about that? He’s well fed and cared for. Should this be weighing heavily on my guilty conscience?

I don’t think so. I’ve also read that having kids is bad for the environment. So is flying home to Wisconsin and California to see family. Should my husband and I think twice about having a family? Should we shun our out-of-state relatives for the earth’s sake? What about Pete? Back to the pound he shall go?

Of course not. It’s about taking steps if and where you can. I can’t stand the guilt-inducing looks from the holier than though environmentalists almost as much as I cringe at the incredulous and literal conservatives who hear statements like “dogs have big eco-footprints” and then disregard everything from said report, statement, study, etc…

Bottom line? In my book, just try to conserve when and where you can. No guilt necessary. Even “No Impact Man” realized major inconsistencies during his experimental year of trying to live life without waste.

And realize it’s ok to love and hug trees, dogs and kids. Maybe even at the same time.

  1. Extreme environmentalism is a Religion that worships the created, not the Creator. The upside-down premise of the basis of the movement can only lead to more and more confusion as the godless progress toward their idea of oneness with their god… Placing mankind below the environment and even animals is outside the plan of the one true God. The strife and anquish that the fear-filled, fear mongers of the environmental movement suffer from is the direct result of their skewed belief system.
That being said, yes, we should recycle, yes we should be good stewards of the earth, but using extreme concern about the environment to control and rob wealth is just plain wrong-headed and arrogant.
Mankind’s impact on the earth’s eco system is not a surprise to our Creator! Certainly, when our worship is rightfully placed on God instead of on the creation, we will be guided with the Wisdom from God as to how to protect the environment without sacrificing the enjoyment of what has been created here, for our use… that is Mankind… on the top of the food chain… for a purpose… for a reason… not a blight upon creation, but a creature designed to embody the purposes of God. Learning, expressing, loving, caring.
By the way, Have you ever met a cheerful environmentalist?…

  2. I think everyone should look around where we live. If you were to go for a walk on the North Shore Trail you can read about how Lake Whatcom was formed by glaciers millions of years ago. Then go out Chuckanut Drive and you can see Palm Trees in the sandstone from the road. How arrogant are we to assume that how we live right now in this moment is how the world will be forever. Some might say that we have “data” now that we didn’t before, well we really only have “data” on about 150-200 years of the history of the world. That’s nothing. Not even a blip. I have heard about a time that we were concerned about global cooling. Well that passed and we are still here. I am not some hayseed who says every time it is cold in summer, or hot in winter.. “What about Global Warming?!?!”. I am just a 25yr old from Fairhaven that reads, looks, and listens. I encourage all of you to do the same before we give up more of our rights for the sake of the “environment”.
